Celebrating 59 Years of Marriage and a Lifetime of Love
June 18, 2024
On June 22nd, 2024, Jefferson Healthcare Center will be joyfully celebrating a remarkable milestone: the 59th wedding anniversary of one of our residents, Betty (Gehring) Hay, and her husband, Herbert. The couple, who married on June 19th, 1965, first met at a missionary meeting at Conneaut Church of God. Betty was attending with her then-boyfriend, who sat on one side of her, while Herbert sat on the other. During the service, when the Pastor asked everyone to join hands, Betty reached into Herbert's pocket to take his hand, surprising him and marking the beginning of their lifelong journey together.
At the time they met, Betty was 19 and Herbert was just shy of 21. They dated for three and a half years before tying the knot. Over the years, they built a life together and had two children, a son and a daughter. Their son is now 54 years old, and their daughter, sadly, passed away at the age of 57 due to stomach cancer.
Betty attributes the longevity of their marriage to three key factors: truly meaning your vows when you say them, maintaining open communication, and focusing on giving more than taking. She warmly adds, "Just lots of lovin’ and lots of givin’."
To mark their special day, Betty and Herbert will enjoy a private dinner at Chops on June 19th. Jefferson Healthcare Center will host a celebration on June 22nd, featuring cake and beverages, as we honor this incredible couple and their enduring love story.
